Supervisory Veterinarian

The Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC), located in Seattle, WA invites applications for a Supervisory Veterinarian in the Division of Research Resources.  The Supervisory Veterinarian heads the Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Unit, and is ultimately responsible for veterinary care of approximately 650 macaques.

The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery Unit employs two additional primate veterinarians, veterinary residents, and a staff of veterinary technicians and technologists.  The unit is charged with provision of veterinary medical and surgical care, including support for complex research protocols.  The Supervisory Veterinarian is responsible for direction and supervision of the veterinary staff, coordination of veterinary activities with other units, and ensuring availability of veterinary support on a 24-hour, 7-day/week basis.  He or she is also responsible for development and oversight of the preventive medicine program for the primate colony.

Other responsibilities include consultation with investigators during protocol development, protocol review for the IACUC, and budget oversight.  This position reports to the Associate Director for Research Resources, and is expected to assist her in ensuring compliance with University policies, federal regulations and AAALAC International standards.  The Supervisory Veterinary is expected to participate in the training of veterinary residents, students, investigators, and technical staff.

Position requirements include DVM or VMD from an AVMA-accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one US state.  ACLAM board certification is preferred.  The successful candidate will have at least five years experience in nonhuman primate medicine, including supervisory experience.  Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.  The position will remain open until filled.  Salary commensurate with experience.

Associate Director, BioResources

* Assist Director to establish, monitor, direct and foster programs which meet or exceed current regulations regarding animal care and use, research protocol review, occupational health and safety, and generation of required reports, records and documents.  Integrate animal welfare, laboratory animal science and research requirements using a science-based approach.
* Support the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) by serving on the IACUC, at the pleasure of the Institutional Official, and or by providing training for BioResources and scientific staff.
* Assist Director and Manager with administrative activities of BioResources Department operations including expense approval; personnel assignments; staffing; the design, construction and allocation of animal related research facilities and participation in Departmental administrative and management meetings and programs. Provide fiscally sound management for department operations.
* Interface with or participate in outside organizations whose work impacts the on the care and use of laboratory animals in the pharmaceutical industry.  Maintain active participation in the laboratory animal science community.

REQUIREMENTS:
* Veterinary medical degree from an AVMA accredited or approved veterinary medical college, or passage of the Foreign Veterinarian Equivalency Examination.
* Board certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
* Six years of experience in laboratory animal medicine.
* Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the United States of America.
* Completion of a formal laboratory animal residency training program or at least six years of experience within the field. 
* Formal research training (e.g. fellowship, MS or PhD)  desirable.
* At least one year of managerial or direct supervisory experience.

· Contribute to policies and best practices for global animal care and use through participation in the AstraZeneca Global Veterinary Operations Group
· Develop and maintain oversight of a comprehensive surgical programs for small and large animals
· Participate in and conduct a variety of teaching and training efforts for investigators, research support staff and animal care technicians
· Ensuring and maintaining the health status of the animal colony through oversight of preventative health, sentinel programs and vendor surveillance
· Provide oversight and support of the transgenic breeding colony
· Provide veterinary diagnostic support and clinical care to the research colony

Responsibilities include providing clinical and surgical care to research and teaching animals at East Carolina University; providing technical support to research projects, collaborating with researchers and/or conducting independent research; assisting the department chair in ensuring compliance with federal regulations and AAALAC International standards; and participating in teaching graduate and professional students and training research and animal care staff.

Position:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited institution in Veterinary Medicine and 5 years experience in Veterinary Medicine, research practices and protocols, and managing the care of animals. Prior experience in laboratory animal medicine and administration is required.  Knowledge of veterinary medicine, laws and regulations applicable to animal use and housing for different species, personnel management, and accounting principles is required. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills are also required.  The ability to interact effectively with colleagues is essential.  Excellent time management and organization skills are required.  Applicant must be licensed as a veterinarian or eligible for licensure in the State of Alabama.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

ACLAM board certification is desirable.  Candidates with previous experience administering university-wide animal care programs at land-grant universities are also desired.

Laboratory Animal Medicine Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Johns Hopkins Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology is accepting applications for our four-year postdoctoral program in laboratory animal medicine for a veterinarian who wishes to pursue a career as a laboratory animal medicine veterinarian in a research setting. Our program, which is recognized by ACLAM, provides training in laboratory animal medicine in preparation for certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) and outstanding research training in a positive, mentored environment. Trainees also have the option to pursue a PhD through concurrent enrollment in a graduate program.

During the first year, emphasis of the program is on acquiring competence in clinical care, pathology, and diagnostic procedures in laboratory animals through rotations in surgical support and post-operative care, old and new world primate medicine and breeding colony management, and rodent program management. Our trainees have extraordinary diagnostic and surgical laboratories at their disposal including interventional radiology, small animal imaging core, rodent microsurgery, and advanced diagnosis through a state of the art hospital facility. The veterinary team provides clinical and surgical services, animal handling and technique training, and protocol consultation to research investigators throughout the Johns Hopkins University. Trainees work closely with departmental faculty, which includes five ACLAM Diplomates, six ACVP Diplomates, and eight comparative medicine scientists.

In the remaining years, emphasis shifts towards basic or translational research supervised by Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology faculty or other faculty within the University. Faculty in Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology conduct research in retrovirology, neuropathology, vascular biology, infectious disease, carcinogenesis, and rodent phenotyping. Financial support is provided by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and have graduated from an AVMA accredited institution and have passed the NAVLE, or have the ECFVG or a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the US. The program is recognized by ACLAM and provides outstanding clinical training in laboratory animal medicine as well as scholarly activities to fulfill the requirements for certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).

Emphasis of the program is on acquiring competence in clinical care, pathology, and diagnostic procedures in laboratory animals through rotations in surgical support and post-operative care, old and new world primate medicine and breeding colony management, and rodent program management. Our trainees have extraordinary diagnostic and surgical laboratories at their disposal including interventional radiology, small animal imaging core, rodent microsurgery, and advanced diagnosis through a state of the art hospital facility. The veterinary team provides clinical and surgical services, animal handling and technique training, and protocol consultation to research investigators throughout the Johns Hopkins University. Trainees work closely with departmental faculty, which includes five ACLAM Diplomates, six ACVP Diplomates, and eight comparative medicine scientists.

Trainees have the opportunity to undertake mentored research projects with faculty members in Molecular and Comparative Pathology or in other departments of the university. Faculty in Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology conduct research in retrovirology, neuropathology, vascular biology, infectious disease, carcinogenesis, and rodent phenotyping.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be a citizen or noncitizen resident of the United States, and have graduated from an AVMA accredited institution and passed the NAVLE, or have the ECFVG or a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the US. Prior clinical experience is highly desirable.

Research Animal Veterinarians

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is seeking candidates to fill two permanent  research animal veterinarian positions and one candidate to fill the position of interim assistant research animal veterinarian, with a salary range of  $55,000 to $115,000 depending upon qualifications.   The WNPRC is an  AAALAC accredited facility that houses approximately 1,400 nonhuman primates (rhesus macaques, cynomolgus macaques, and common marmosets).  The successful applicant will work with a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, animal care staff, and investigators from a variety of research units.

The successful applicants will be responsible for providing daily  medical care to nonhuman primates utilized in biomedical research.   Duties will include conducting physical exams, diagnosing and treating injury and disease, performing dental prophylaxis, performing or assisting in clinical and research surgical procedures, and ensuring the implementation of preventative health plans.  In addition, the applicant will provide research support for scientists utilizing nonhuman primate models of reproduction, infectious disease, aging, and neurodegenerative disorders. The successful applicant will also participate in on-call rotations for the campus wide Research Animal Resources Center which provides veterinary care for a variety of laboratory animal species (rodents, birds, fish, dogs, cats, horses, and nonhuman primates).

The 4-6 month interim position offers an excellent opportunity for veterinarians interested in expanding their experience base and obtaining exposure to laboratory animal species especially nonhuman primates. There is also a possibility that this position could evolve into a full-time position at the WNPRC.

Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited school of veterinary medicine or successful completion of ECFVG program, and must be  eligible for licensure and accreditation by the State of Wisconsin.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, with nonhuman primate experience preferred but not required.
