Title: Assessing and Managing Risk in Animal Research: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Summary: Many animal studies involve a wide range of potential hazards that must be considered and appropriately managed to ensure the safety of personnel, animals, and the environment. Risk assessment is a systematic method to accurately characterize and organize these hazards and implement appropriate practices to minimize risk to the lowest acceptable level; it yields the best results when done through collaboration. Veterinarians can provide a critical leadership role and unique perspectives in identifying and quantifying risks as well as applying effective risk mitigation methods for hazards that involve animals. However, to be successful in this process, they must also be able to garner the confidence and support of others (e.g., health and safety personnel and senior institutional leadership). This webinar provides a brief, high-level overview of the risk assessment process as it applies to research involving animals. Participants will have opportunities to apply these concepts during interactive scenarios that are designed to illustrate how the risk assessment process can be applied in a variety of research programs and applications. Strategies to encourage a collaborative process that includes analysis and sharing of critical data with other stakeholders will also be addressed.
